So the reason I started this blog, in the first instance, is because I had something to say that seemed too long to send via facebook messenger. I guess ‘in the abundance of words there wanteth not sin’. Nevertheless, here it is.
The founder of facebook wants us all to be more open and connected. As I write, the world is in lockdown, and we face some large shared global problems led by a virus, he wants us ALL to be more open and connected. But here’s the thing..
The shortcoming of our society(s) is not that we don’t have mega tools to change everything on a global scale – or a national scale – or whatever large scale. Or to coordinate, or work together, or connect. The problem is that we don’t have the personal love, commitment and motivation – the goodness – to make things better. We don’t make the right choices, for the right reasons, or know what is good for us or our world. We might think we do. But actually, making things global just means a few people will get to make bigger wrong choices for all of us.
‘He is before all things, and by him all things consist.’ Colossians 1:17.
God does not need us to organize things. He made the universe and everything in it, and all of us. He can do this. He asks us to do the one thing we only can do, listen to him and obey. He has chosen not to do that for us, because he wants us to be us. But he also tells us how best to be us, if we choose. If we fail to do it, no system of our own making can provide a ‘workaround’ that brings good from ungodly people. If we do the things he asks, chiefly to ‘believe in him whom he has sent’, he can put all the pieces together in ways beyond imagining. He is doing that anyway, even though most of the pieces are bust.
Genesis 11:1-9 are instructive. God ‘scattered mankind across the face of the earth’ by ‘confounding their language’, because prior to that, they had embarked upon a global project – the tower of Babel. According to God, it was not a good project. Nor was the unity of mankind about to bring any other good upon the Earth. Once mankind is reunited in a global project, it will not be long before we destroy ourselves. God will continue to scatter us until the time appointed. Thank God the fate of mankind is not in the hands of the founder of facebook. Amen.
